“We met Erena outside her home, she was very excited to meet us and spoke rapid Yiddish. After many stories had been exchanged and photographs taken, she invited us into her home. Although sparse and without any modern conveniences, it was still the finest home in the area. She eagerly showed us old photographs and told us of relatives that had traveled far away. Spending time with her was a wonderful way to see how these people had kept their spirit against all odds.”
